First City Church desires to come alongside children and youth of all ages as they learn to love and follow Jesus and share His story with others as they grow into adults who participate in the life of a local church.

Family Ministry

Foundations of Family Ministry

  • Children are best discipled through the ordinary means of grace: instructing children in Scripture and the foundations of the faith, family prayer and devotions, being part of church community, and having regular conversations throughout the day and around the dinner table.

  • Parents are the primary disciplers of their children. First City Church equips parents to disciple their children in everyday life through teaching, modeling, and gospel-centered resources.

  • Children and students are part of the local church. First City Church creates opportunities for children to participate in the life of the church through our Sunday gatherings, gospel communities, and serving. As children get older, our structures move children from age-specific context to the broader church community.

  • Children have different developmental abilities. First City Church designs unique spaces to disciple children according to their age-specific needs.

  • At First City, we put a high value on parent & adult volunteer-led student ministry. Students who have meaningful relationships with adults in the church (in addition to their parents) are far more likely to endure and mature in their faith into adulthood. As such, significant priority is placed on equipping parents and adults for investing in and discipling our students.

Equipping Parents

  • First City pastors occasionally put on parenting conferences or seminars to equip parents in discipling their children.

  • Members equip one another. For example, a group of men at First City might gather to discuss how to better disciple and mentor the young men of First City. Women wake up early in the morning to log onto a Zoom call to pray for the children of First City Church and the children they teach in the public schools. Parents meet for book studies to learn how to apply the gospel in their parenting.

  • During the Advent season, the entire church practices evening devotions either with family or friends using our Advent Devotional Guide. Each Sunday night, the church comes together to pray, with opportunities for children to pray with one another in adult-led small groups
